Moseley
Bog, a Local Nature Reserve, is an area of ancient woodland near Moseley, Birmingham, and
close to Sarehole Mill. This is a woodland explored by Tolkien during the few years
he lived nearby as a young child. At that time the area was a glade he describes as
being full of wild flowers. Walking through the area today it is easy to appreciate
how his imagination may have been stirred.
Under threat some years ago, it was saved
by the efforts of local residents who set up The Moseley Bog Conservation Group.
They have worked tirelessly in conjunction with volunteers and the Rangers to maintain and
look after this area of outstanding interest.
Recently the Wildlife Trust have announced
a package of care awarded by the Heritage Lottery Fund amounting to £376.500. This
has enabled the restoration of parts of the site and improved public access.
Within the boundaries of Moseley Bog there
are burnt mounds dating back to 3000BC.
You can enter Moseley bog from Yardley Wood
Road end or via Thirlmere Drive, opposite Sarehole Mill and leading off Wake Green Road.
